Books for Young Readers
Many households in economically challenged areas are void of developmental books to fan the fires of the young readers. This program is national, meaning we will work with program leads in the community to identify residents and schools where the maximum impact will be realized. We will purchase books for young readers in the community.
Confidence Through Modeling
Seven million girls and women who have eating disorders, compared with 1 million boys and men. Ten percent report onset at 10 years or younger; 33% ages 11 to 15. Three-fourths of girls with low self-esteem engage in negative activities, such as disordered eating, bullying, smoking or drinking. This compares to 25% of girls with high self-esteem. This program uses runway modeling as a way to teach it's students how to develop confidence and positive self-image.
Healthy Meals
The US percentage of food-insecure households, those with limited or uncertain ability to acquire acceptable foods in socially acceptable ways, rose from 11% to 15% between 2005 and 2009. Obesity-related illness, including chronic disease, disability, and death, is estimated to carry an annual cost of $190.2 billion. Projections estimate that by 2018, obesity will cost the U.S. 21 percent of our total healthcare costs - $344 billion annually. This program provides healthy meals to veterans/community members.
